Its with sadness and shock that I write this; after helping our dear girl Pepper cross over not four days ago, we just returned from the emergency vet yet again.
At about 2 am this morning, Williams Dallas Star, aka, Star, had a grand mal seizure while sleeping. This was his first seizure and most likely was caused by some sort of neurological event such as a clot or stroke. After seeing that he was not recovering from the seizure, we rushed him to the vet. He had another seizure and it was clear he was not going to recover. We helped him cross over.
Star came to us as a rescue - when he was about six, his owner at the time needed serious back surgery and a year of physical therapy. She decided to find Star a home that could support his active lifestyle.
Star lived with my parents for the next several years. About four years ago, he came to live at our house and my three aussies. He was a quirky dog; he never really played with toys and he often became anxious if play became too animated. Still, he was a funny little guy who really enjoyed getting his butt scratched.
Almost completely blind and losing his hearing, Star was still full of life up until the very end. Last night we had supper, we went outside and enjoyed the evening, and then around 10 pm he started pacing the hallway; his way of letting me know it was time for bed. I crawled into my bed and he crawled into his.
Our house is now empty; he was the last of our senior citizens to go; Black Kitty, Miranda and Sydney passed last year, and Pepper and Star this week.
It's very strange to walk through the door and not be greeted by a dog. I have to think that there is a reason for everything, and for that I am curious.
